Crown History - 1930's to 1950
Crown Equipment Corporation was first born is rural central American town called New Bremen, Ohio, USA. The business has grown from a one-room outfit into an internationally distinguished company, currently considered to be the seventh leading forklift manufacturer on the planet.
The Crown company was founded in 1945 by two brothers, Allen A. Dicke and the late Carl H. Dicke. Carl’s son and Chairman Emeritus, James F. Dicke, joined the family business later that same year. Presently, his son, James F. Dicke II, is Chairman and CEO. James F. Dicke III, serves as the company President these days, becoming the fourth generation of the Dicke descendants to uphold this position.
Crown in the beginning started with a small client base producing temperature controls that they manufactured for coal burning furnaces. The production of these control units took place in a former hardware store stationed in New Bremen, Ohio, where Crown’s headquarters presently remain.
By the year 1949, Crown moved into the production of rotators for antenna due the greater interest in televisions at the time. The product was able to improve the picture and signal quality. The company’s successful move allowed them to become a leading maker of units until 2001. The company ceased production in October after a decline in the worldwide need for TV antenna rotators.

In the early 1950’s Crown diversified into the manufacturing and restoration of electronic and mechanical machinery for government and private industry. Following several profitable bids within a short period of time, the company had built a respectable business in this field.
With such versatility and success, Crown was able to expand its production to embrace materials handling equipment. Crown began production of forklifts and lift trucks in 1957. The company believed the market demanded a smaller line of first-class quality lift trucks. Crown promptly fashioned an exceptional series of modern equipment and swiftly became the most rapidly evolving material handling organization with its assortment of merchandise.
By 1966, Crown had ventured into the foreign material handling marketplaces by opening up shop in Sydney, Australia. Sydney is now a regional head office for Crown for all Pacific Asian sales, marketing, and services. Crown remains an unwavering industry leader today, supported by exceptional service, solid sales and solid production operations.
Two years later, Crown had moved into the European marketplaces by buying up an Irish manufacturing facility from a German Company, Steinbock. There they started to construct PTH hand pallet trucks. Later that same year, Crown started their first London operation located close by Heathrow Airport. The sales and service operation of Crown’s complete forklift line was accessible in the UK by the end of the decade. In the early 1970’s, Crown expanded and began marketing and advertising lift trucks across Europe through autonomous sellers.
