The business Harland and Wolff was established in the year 1861, by Gustav Wilhelm Wolff, born within Hamburg during eighteen thirty four, together with Mr. Edward James Harland born during eighteen thirty one. During the year 1858 the general manager during the time, Harland, purchased the small shipyard on Queen's Island. He purchased the property from Robert Hickson, who was his employer.
Once Harland bought Hickson's shipyard, he then made his assistant Wolff a partner in the company. Gustav Wilhelm Wolff was the nephew of Gustav Schwabe of Hamburg. He has invested heavily in the Bibby Line. The first 3 ships which the brand new shipyard made were for that line. By being inventive, Harland made the company a successful undertaking. Amongst his famous suggestions was increasing the overall strength of the ship by replacing the upper wooden decks with iron ones. Moreover, he was able to increase the capacity of the ship by giving the hulls a squarer cross section and a flatter bottom.
Harland and Wolff eventually experienced competitive pressures in regards to building ships. They sought to shift their focus and broaden their portfolio. They decided to focus more on structural engineering and design and less on building ships. The company also diversified into the areas of offshore construction projects, ship repair as well as competing for more projects which had to do with metal engineering or construction.
Harland and Wolff had other interests, such as a series of bridges to be constructed in Britain and in the Republic of Ireland. These bridges comprise the restoration of the James Joyce Bridge and Dublin's Ha'penny Bridge. In the nineteen eighties, with the building of the Foyle Bridge, their initial venture into the civil engineering sector occurred.
Today, the last shipbuilding job of Harland and Wolff was the MV Anvil Point. This was amongst six near identical Point class sealift ships which was built for use by the Ministry of Defense. The ship was launched during 2003, after being built under license from Flensburger, Schiffbau-Gesellschaft, German shipbuilders.
The Advantages of a Man Lift
For places that are too high to reach by any other means, man lifts offer a safe and easy way to fix problems. These are mechanical lifts which allow workers to safely reach a high work location. Normally, man lifts are utilized by construction and service workers to complete work on light poles, buildings and other places that are very up high to reach by other means.
Safety
Taking safety into consideration is the main factor when using a man lift. Ladders are not a viable option for extreme heights and hence man lifts are the perfect choice for these places. The majority of these equipment are equipped with emergency shut-off switches and safety rails to make worker safety a main concern.
Range
Man lifts can reach certain heights that other machinery cannot reach. This machine was first used to pick fruit, but has evolved to take on other tasks. Like for example, they are normally used for changing light bulbs and to do finishing work in the construction industry. Usually, man lifts can reach heights of twenty to one hundred feet.
There are smaller man lifts which could operate indoors to carry out tasks in areas such as big office buildings, hotels and sports arenas. They can be powered with electricity. This eliminates the noxious fumes and the hazards associated with them.
Engine-Powered Boom Lifts
An engine-powered boom lift is the answer for workers who have to reach heights both efficiently and quickly. The boom lift allows for a much mobility, capable of moving in numerous directions. Boom lifts can easily fit between narrow spaces too. Each "joint" in the boom lift is controlled to adjust to various heights to be able to position the worker exactly where he or she has to be in order to get the job done. The engine power system is what enables boom lifts to reach their full elevation quickly. Firefighters often utilize engine powered boom lifts when they have to rapidly ascend to heights during a rescue mission.
