Caterpillar Container Forklifts - Specifically Designed to Load and Unload Large, Heavy Freight Containers
Container Forklift
A container forklift is specifically designed to load and unload large, heavy freight containers. They are used to transport freight off and on trains, ships and truck beds. Container forklifts are the biggest and most durable types of forklifts made. They need to be extremely maneuverable on uneven terrain and have sufficient torque and power to safely lift bulky containers. Typically, they have large pneumatic tires and heavy-duty diesel engines.
A container forklift, like all types of forklift, uses forks to lift the containers. Forks need to be positioned to ensure the load is secure during transport. Several container forklift models are only meant to raise the containers several meters off the ground. Other container handlers utilize a different technique for lifting containers to greater heights. A container handler uses an apparatus attached to the front of the vehicle to clamp down on either end of the container like jaws. The machinery is counterbalanced with weights to maintain stability.
Carrying and transferring containers is the main purpose of a container forklift. Standard forklifts do not have enough reach for working in ports. The forks are rated according to the most weight they can handle. The capabilities of the forklift must never be exceeded and should be posted prominently in the cockpit.
Why Caterpillar Pneumatic Tire Forklifts are Common in Warehouse and Shipping Operations
Utilize a Pneumatic Forklift
You can normally find pneumatic forklifts in shipping and warehouse operations. Also called pump trucks or pallet trucks, they are used to move supplies and things around on wooden pallets using metal forks mounted on a wheeled counterweight. The counterweight includes a pump which raises the forks off the ground. A pallet truck is designed to be operated by a single person.
Pallet trucks should be operated with care in order to avoid loss of control while lifting heavy loads. Machine should be inspected prior to operating. Clear the wheels area of any obstructions. Make certain that the handle smoothly turns. The pallet should be stacked carefully to ensure that nothing would fall off during transportation.
So as to release air in the pump and lower the forks, squeeze the lever found on the inside of the metal loop on the end of the pallet truck's handle. The forks can then be pushed into the pallet slots. The forks should be at the center to be able to guarantee even distribution of the pallet's weight across them. Raise the forks from the ground by pumping the pneumatic lift's handle until the pallet has completely cleared the ground. Do not raise the pallet too high or the forklift can unbalance.
Move the pallet by pulling on the handle and then dragging it behind you. It is not safe to push the pallet in front of you as the momentum could cause it to lose control. Slowly take turns and don't try to stop suddenly. Gradually stop, squeeze the lever, and the forks would lower to the ground. Finally, remove the forks from the pallet by pulling them out. Return the pallet truck to its permanent location.
